About me
Even as a small child, I was mainly interested in the world of animals. Nothing remained unseen, neither a beautiful flower nor the smallest beetle.
The older I got, the more I was fascinated by wolves and their descendants, the dogs.
I was allowed to gather my first experiences at a weekly place where I was allowed to go for a walk once a week with two nice female Labradors.
At the same time, a male Flat Coated Retriever stayed with us for the holidays and I always had a lot of fun with him.
A few years passed until one of my (many) dreams came true, namely a (own) four-legged friend moved in with us, forever. A three year old female Border Collie called Lady.
Her job would have been to herd 300 sheep with two other dogs, but she was not interested. Her owners had to give her up with a heavy heart.
Since Lady did not want to herd sheep, we had to find another sporting activity for her.
On every hike, swimming in the lake, or romping in the snow, she is ready for anything and so I decided to try dog sports. Agility.
I quickly noticed that Lady liked the sport, and so did I.
However, it was very important to me from the beginning that Lady did not get overconfident and that the whole sport could only be mastered with a lot of excitement and stress. So I started practising with her there early on and we were able to start with a lot of calm not only in training but also in competitions. Whereas, unfortunately, for a lot of dogs it is pure stress. And that's exactly what prompted me to change something. But I was still a bit too young at that time and could therefore only practise on myself or Lady at the beginning.
At the same time I started my apprenticeship as a veterinary practice assistant at the small animal clinic of the University of Bern and unfortunately had to give up my beloved hobby with Lady in the last year of my apprenticeship, as time was no longer an option.
In the meantime, Lady is almost 15 years old and still in very good shape for her age, it's just great fun with her.
As already mentioned, I was allowed to learn and successfully complete the apprenticeship of my dream job almost seven years ago. I have always worked in this profession and a few years ago I was allowed to complete the vocational training. I really enjoy working with the students and being able to pass on my knowledge.
As I work at the university in Bern, we have a lot of veterinary students and I have always noticed that after their very, very long studies to become veterinarians, they know everything about medicine, but almost nothing about the behaviour of dogs and cats.
So I took the initiative and am now allowed to lead a study course as a lecturer, which is called Dealing with Dogs and Cats (especially in the practice/clinic). I am supported by several TPA colleagues and of course Lady is also involved.
My aim is to teach the students the correct handling of the four-legged friends, to explain to them what the dog or cat is trying to tell us. The course has a lot to do with behaviour, which we want to bring closer to the students in "real" scenes in lecture rooms, as well as with videos.
In addition to all of this, I was also able to complete my training as a dog trainer and attend further training courses.
The small animal clinic offers me a wonderful basis to deepen my dog training knowledge and I am allowed to give group trainings on a regular basis.
I am happy to help you and your four-legged friend in word and deed to create a harmonious relationship.
